Pittsburgh, PA – Saint Louis FC continued their undefeated start to the season with a 2-1 win over Pittsburgh Riverhounds in Week 4 of the USL season.
Kay Banjo opened the scoring for Pittsburgh in the 5th minute but STLFC leveled through Jose Angulo in the 30th minute. Saint Louis FC sealed the three points with Christian Volesky's goal in the 68th minute to move atop the Eastern Conference.
Pittsburgh benefited from a Devala Gorrick mishit clearance that fell to Banjo, who was making his first professional start, and he calmly curled the ball around the STLFC goalkeeper to open the scoring in the 5th minute. Soon after in the 20th minute, Banjo nearly made it two goals as his shot beat Gorrick but rattled off the post. Saint Louis FC responded through Angulo, who won the USL MVP Award in 2013 as a Pittsburgh player and was making his first return appearance. He received the ball from Wes Charpie with his back to goal and turned to beat four defenders with a left-footed shot to level the score in the 30th minute.
The second half saw Saint Louis FC improve in the final third and they were rewarded with the game-winner. Charpie was again the provider as his pass slipped between two defenders to find Volesky who touched the ball past the Pittsburgh goalkeeper in the 68th minute. This is the third goal in three games for Volesky who was named USL Player of the Week in Week 2 of the season.
Saint Louis FC travel to FC Cincinnati this weekend, which will be broadcast on KPLR Channel 11, before returning home to face Charlotte Independence on Saturday, April 22nd at 7:30 pm CT at Toyota Stadium. Purchase your tickets today HERE.
