ST. LOUIS, MO (November 6th, 2017) – Former SLSG and STLFC Academy player Josh Sargent has been named to the United States Men’s National Team roster for the upcoming international friendly match on November 14th against Portugal in Leiria, Portugal. He is the youngest player named on the 21-man roster by caretaker head coach Dave Sarachan and will be the first senior team call-up for the O’Fallon, Missouri native.
“It’s obviously a huge honor to get called into a first team camp, especially at such a young age,” said Sargent. “I’m just hoping to work hard in camp and make the most of this opportunity.”
Sargent made his first USMNT appearance at the U15 level before being called into the U17 USMNT Residency Program in Bradenton, Florida in 2015. During his residency, Sargent was an integral part of the team that won the 2016 Nike International Friendlies with four goals and two assists against the best young talent from Brazil, Portugal, and Turkey. He was named to the 20-man squad that competed in the 2017 CONCACAF U17 Championship and went on to score five goals during the tournament which saw the team lose the final on penalty kicks to Mexico. Sargent was then named to the U20 USMNT squad for the 2017 FIFA U20 World Cup and scored twice on his debut against Ecuador to become the youngest American player to score in the U20 World Cup. His five goals during the tournament tied him with Jozy Altidore, Eddie Johnson, and Taylor Twellman as the United States’ all-time leading goalscorer at the U20 level. Sargent was then named to the 21-man roster for the 2017 FIFA U17 World Cup which recently concluded in October, and became only the second US player to represent the country at both the U17 and U20 World Cups in the same year. His three goals would help the US reach the quarterfinals where they were eliminated by eventual champions England. In total, Sargent has represented the United States in 49 appearances and scored 29 goals at the U17 and U20 levels.
“This is an exciting opportunity for Josh and is a testament to his hard work and development over the years, both at the club and international level,” said Kevin Kalish, SLSG Vice-President and Club Director. “We are proud he will represent his country with the senior team and provide an example for younger players at SLSG and STLFC of what is possible.”
The match against Portugal will be broadcast live on Fox Sports 1 (FS1), UniMas and UDN at 2:45 p.m. CT.
